Workshop intermediate/advanced 2025

with A-Nicolas and Ssyrene

Workshop: “Pathways in Rope—From Foundations to Flow”

A-Nicolas is a French international artist residing in Brussels, a rope-community builder and one of most well-known European bakushi’s.

His shibari style ‘Yoroï-ryu’ bridges traditional Japanese kinbaku with dance, Aikido, Thai massage, contact-improvisation and system A.

This workshop focuses on movement, simplicity and connection, balancing structure and improvisation.

It builds up conceptually with little exercises, from simple to a more challenging complexity.

Topics covered:

⁃ Tying with One rope and Movement: with focus on breathing, balance and flow.

⁃ Classic Forms and Foundational Japanese Aesthetics: with focus on posture, structure and elegance.

⁃ Simplicity and Depth, exploring minimalism and subtlety.

⁃ Returning to Movement and Embodied Posture: influenced by Aikido, System A, Thai massage, meditation and dance.

⁃ Organic Tying: using natural shapes and inspiration from Ikebana and Bonsai.

⁃ Let Go of Form: to release structured techniques in favor of working from intuition.

Nicolas embraces organic teaching principles, shaping the workshop on the basis on questions asked in the beginning, his observations and the exchange and dynamics during the weekend, creating a unique adaptation to the group.
